I think your mistake is equating the jingoistic and militaristic flag
ceremonies we have before sporting events as a demonstration of love for country. For the NFL and college football it's a cynical cash proposition. For almost everyone else its a bore. What it is not is a test of loyalty.
I've seen some truly patriotic and quiet moments at sporting events. The last game of the Mariners' historic 2001 season when Jamie Moyer held the flag on a pole and led the team around the bases, tears streaming down his face. One of my son's high school football games against a Seattle high school where they didn't play the anthem but just led the crowd in the pledge of allegiance. That's good stuff.
