Couple of thoughts
1. It isn't "thought police". She is being judged on what she voluntarily placed in the public sphere, not just what she thought. Calling that Orwellian seems hyperbolic to me. Further, if she is a 20 year veteran, she should know that what she says can affect how people judge how she carries out her duties. Whether the punishment is excessive, I don't know, but punishment is warranted.
2. She didn't distinguish between good protestors and violent protestors. She said: 'I’ve seen so many black lives matter [sic] hashtags in these posts. Just to let you know — they are terrorists. They hate me. They hate my uniform. They don’t care if I die." This is a generalization as well as projection.
3. She literally wrote: "So when you share posts and things on Facebook I’d really appreciate if you’d THINK before doing so." She didn't follow her own advice.
4. When you post of FB, it isn't just "emoting to friends", its a public statement. If she had this conversation in private, I might have more sympathy. The problem is that when a policewoman makes that statement, it gives people a reason to question her ability to fairly do her job.
5. Sure, people on this board are worse (probably me on occasion), but you and I don't have a public facing job that requires the general public to have confidence in our ability to do that job.
6. Either way, thank you for the thoughtful response.
