So, Orwell 1984 per Wiki "broadly...examines the role of truth and facts
within politics and the ways they are manipulated". We see that on both sides today. "Orwellian" as an adjective, entering common usage including "Big Brother", "doublethink", "Thought Police" among others. We see obvious examples in this case. Parallels have been drawn to mass surveillance and violations of freedom of expression. Again,, applies.
McCarthyism, in a narrow literal sense, is characterized by political repression and a campaign of spreading fear of communist influence. Per Britanica, "the term has since become a byname for defamation of character or reputation by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations, especially on the basis unsubstantiated charges." I thought it was obvious that communism isn't involved and that I meant it in the broad sense of political repression of a point of view (whether I disagree with that point of view or not).
