I know this was discussed yesterday, but I thought I throw my two cents in.

For those of you who don't know Juneteenth (June 19th, 1865) was the day slaves in Galveston were told that they were now free. Many believe that these were the last group of slaves to be informed of their freedom. Well, they weren't.

What happened in Glaveston on June 19, 1865 did happen and it's a great story, but there were many others who were still held in bondage in Kentucky and Delaware, until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December of 1865. Furthermore, did any Union troops go into "the Indian Territory" and informed escaped slaves that they were now free? Did any Union troops go into the maroon socities (runaway slaves communities) that existed in the Great Dismal Swamp and other areas and inform them they need not hide any longer, that they were free?

Now, there is no way that Congress is going to create a federal holiday in December to recognize the end of slavery . . . . there are already too many holidays during the "holidays", but if there were to be a new holiday to recognize the end of slavery, then it should be Dec 18th recognize when the 13th Amendment was ratified.

Another reason I'm against this "holiday" - it does nothing, NOTHING, to help end the biasesness and racism that still exists in America. This "holiday" this is just a way for politicians to say, "see, I care about the black community" without doing shit for the black community.

There are a lot of ways to help our minority communities, but creating a national holiday to celebrate Juneteenth is not one of them.
