Interesting point - Bill Maher sort of predicted something like that in

2024. Trumpie state legislatures will overturn their state elections and send slates of electors they choose, instead of those chosen by the state’s election. Harris as VP then refuses to certify on 1/6/25.

It is also similar to 2000. I had been a Bush voter that year so I did not have to accept a result I did not like. But more broadly, the SC reached a decision with which virtually no Gore voter agreed, but all accepted, in the sense that only W showed up on Inauguration Day. Gore conceded - that is absolutely key. The leader of the party refusing to do that is step one in ending peaceful transitions of power that were taken for granted pre-Trumpistan. It is also step one in inciting the coup attempt that is currently ongoing. Trump’s failure to concede is unprecedented.

If your scenario played out and the SC decided that Pence was within his rights, then I would have no choice but to accept it, because that’s how the country works. Depending on all the circumstances, I may not have agreed with it, but I would have considered Trump to be the lawful president of the US.

That is the essence of the poison that Trump is spreading now. He spreads completely baseless doubts about the integrity of our electoral systems and processes, jumping from conspiracy theory to conspiracy theory. He doesn’t discriminate - no theory is too outlandish to gain purchase with him. And then he spews it over and over, sowing doubts with these gullible mobs of his, and all repubs push for election “reforms” entirely based on doubts from his campaign of lies. They are not even based on all the procedural matters you complain about, which for their part, were summarily dismissed in scores of court cases, most of which just amounted to throwing anything against a wall, not caring that nothing would stick.

The point always was just to sow doubt about the elections, not to reveal actual flaws. Because this “wasn’t” a coup attempt - you are right about that. It was part of an ongoing coup attempt. The other thing Maher said last week - 2020 was just a dress rehearsal. The false doubts Trump is sowing, and loyal subjects help to spread, are the rubber hitting in the road in the ongoing coup attempt. The main act is currently planned for 2024. All these efforts to install Trump loyalists in local election roles and to give legislatures veto rights over state votes is laying the groundwork for it. That’s what defenders of American democracy should be focused on, not food vendors and ID requirements.

See, this notion that I would not accept verdicts of courts - I am an American. I am not tied to my fellow countrymen by ethnicity or religion or race or anything like that. I’m tied to them by my faith in American ideals and devotion to our founding governing document. Faith in the courts as the final arbiter of disputes is central and indispensable to it. Your belief that faith in the courts and all these institutions is optional is a great exhibition of the destruction of the only ties that bind us as a country.
