Which I think was true of most FB fans before last night. Gruden is being cancelled - I guess has been; it doesn’t take long - for misogynistic and homophobic private emails. These were emails intended for nobody’s eyes but the recipient’s.

I am not endorsing his rant against female refs, gay players, or any of the “tropes” he allegedly used. And once again, we see no number of scandals involving indelicate emails can ever seem to make people learn to keep things like this off email. Jon, dude, you want to rail against gay players, pick up the damn phone.

However I feel about Gruden or his tough-guy-standard assaults on women and gays, this bothers me. He was not under investigation. I haven’t seen stories of gays or women coming forward to complain about things he did or said to them. Dungy and Tirico defended him, or so I read. His private remarks (although people, people, remember, email is never guaranteed to remain private!) came to light as “collateral damage”, and in less than 24 hours, far as I know, poof! He’s cancelled!

It really does smack of McCarthyism. It’s not the govt, so it’s not the same thing, but it has a similar effect. Lessons about staying squeaky clean on email aside, if somehow all of our private conversations could be made public, almost none of us could stay employed nowadays.
