we're still discussing the rights of gays to marry in 2021 in a political context, I do think there are otherwise non-hateful / non-mean spirited people who oppose gay marriage for (their perceived) religious reasons.

My parents for example are opposed to gay marriage. They support the idea of legal civil unions to effectively confer the same rights to gays, but they believe that "marriage" is strictly a union between a man and a woman. Part of it is generational and you're not going to change the minds of 80+ year olds on stuff like this, but part of it is legitimately religious based (putting aside the fact that Christians tend to focus on this one issue while conveniently ignoring a whole host of other less convenient rules in the Bible). But my parents don't hate gays, fear gays, or harbor ill will towards gays, and while my dad can be a bit of a curmudgeon, my mom doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in her body.

That said, there's a difference between a couple of 80 year olds being set in their ways and holding strong religious beliefs, and a politician espousing views on policy that would impact the rights of gay people.
