Only people on the left would ever say, "Yes the administration should
have done better." And they have in numerous op-eds which, frankly, piss me off, because this nis one place we should be emulating our righty brothers and denying responsibility and dodging blame.
Because--while testing and isolation of infected people was and remains important, it was CRITICAL before we had a vaccine (for which, kudos to Trump for fast-tracking and eliminating the usual bureaucratic hurdles) but became less so once we'd gotten the vaccines, UNTIL Omicron showed an ability to breakthrough-infect the vaccinated previously unimagined.
Now the demand for testing is through the roof, and it TO ME is not unexpected that an unexpected huge upswing in demand for tests would create a backlog that won't dissipate until either a) emergency production has geared up to handle the problem, so a lag-time issue or b) Omicron has peaked and subsided.
Now my old business (separating dollars from liability insurance carriers) largely depended on the success or failure of my arguments about what a reasonable person should have done, and to me I'm not sure it's a slam dunk either way that in May, June, and July the Administration's primary function should REASONABLY have been to hawk the test production numbers. I'm not even sure that should have REASONABLY been second, third, or fourth on their to-do list. But it should have been on there somewhere and to the extent it wasn't, that was a failure, I guess. But not a very big one.
So to me we--the left, especially the moderate Biden left should be saying what you damn well know Trump would be saying, which (if it were Trump saying it, so take the self-aggrandizement out of it for use by Biden), "Come on, who could have expected this? The smart play--and I ALWAYS make the smart play, you know this-- was spending all our efforts in getting people to take my big, beautiful vaccine and I STILL think that's what people need to do. I give you people the tools you need to get rid of this thing and you ignore it. It's just sad."
