No I don't think you are over-extrapolating.
More like the article provides examples of the most extreme impact - death - of the conditions that made rural white America so ripe for the pickings for a nationalist populist movement. And why the Trump movement's demagoguery was so effective.
And that is the thing that I think many anti-Trumpies don't fully appreciate - it is a movement. The appeal is emotional. And those who are not only hoping for, but expecting, an end to the "movement" through something extraordinary like impeachment should IMO think again. There are probably more Trumpies out there than we realize who really would support him if he shot someone in the face at random. Not because they are deplorable, but because they feel desperate. A significant chunk of the country will never accept an impeachable offense, no matter how strong the evidence.
The "movement" is better defeated at the ballot box, first and foremost by at a minimum beginning to understand and empathize with the source of the desperation. Even though I think there are really no great solutions - the problem with transition to a "knowledge economy" - the less educated get left behind. With any profound shift, people who once thrived get left behind.
There are many more scapegoats than there are solutions.
