It's also important to look not just at the general election

Once Trump had the nomination he was going to capture a large percentage of those who traditionally vote R, regardless. The more important question, it seems to me, is what demographic got him the nomination. Any other of the R contenders would likely have won the general election by even greater margins (due to all the affluent and educated R-voters who switched to Hillary because they couldn't stomach Trump).

Although I'd prefer that rural America be relieved of the blame for his nomination, my guess is that it was that demographic that got him nominated--thanks to so many of them choosing him over the social-con religious-right candidates they usually prefer.
