I remember reading a Post article about the NE Corridor


IIRC, the route generates $$ several hundred million in operating income, but has a significant backlog of capital projects to manage in the coming years (that may keep it from being profitable on a FCF, I don't remember).

The conventional wisdom is that there is a real opportunity here to focus on shorter routes for "city" commutes, I think 26 of them accounted for >80% of total ridership. like all other infrastructure, density matters. that's why we had a universal service fund to run telephone lines to rural communities. suburban sprawl costs us $$$ as well (communities of mcmansions 30 miles from the city).
