Pre-Civil War statues should be safe
TJ is the obvious example here of someone whose personal morals wouldn't stand today. a slave owner who also fathered children with a slave (how willing Sally Hemmings was in that could also be problematic).
But, that's part of our country. An ugly part, but it was normal at the time for US citizens to live like that. Confederate soldiers were trying to secede from the US at a time when the country decided to end slavery. Confederate soldiers were fighting against the United States and what the US stood for. There is no reason to celebrate traitors. Remember them in history class and in museums, but don't celebrate them in open public spaces.
TJ was an important part of the US and was an example of the good side and bad side of the country in its infancy. Had he fought for the south, it would be different. But I think people who died before the Civil War get a pass.
