Indeed, in the northern states (like VA) very few people were..
..slave owners. The war, at the highest level was 100% about slavery and the slave nation, but that wasn't the case at the infantry level.......in the South the poor folks were convinced by those with access to the press (slave owners) that it was about tyranny and protecting your family from invading Yankees (for which there was tremendous distrust that had built up in the 1830-1860. The Yankees convinced to pick up guns, were mostly not fighting to free the slaves, they were fighting to put down a rebellion. Sure there were abolitionist among them, but their primary goal was to preserve the union.
Anyhow, the 1850s were some of the most historically interesting times in our country's history. Reading "A Cry for Freedom" now. All the political chess that took place in the 1850s is very interesting.
