This whole Moore debate throws into perfect sharp relief the entire problem

with our political system as is.

If I lived in Alabama, I'd probably vote for Roy Moore. You know why? Because I sure as hell would not vote for someone who is diametrically opposed to my own politics!

I could possibly look for a third party candidate, knowing for sure that 1) they won't win and 2) that vote could help put someone in office who is diametrically opposed to my own politics. This happens to be exactly what I did in the presidential election.

More to the point, though, how do you hold anyone accountable? Let's say you're a dyed in the wool Democrat who was absolutely furious over the VA scandal, thinking that veterans deserved far better care than they got from the administration. You're so mad you.... vote Republican in the next election? (For Trump, as it turned out?) I think not. Likewise, how many Democrats would vote for a Republican candidate for Senate who promised to roll back environmental laws, deport the hell out of illegal immigrants, stand against union activity and minimum wage laws, and assorted other anti-liberal positions? Even if their own candidate were accused of the same things Roy Moore is? Close to zero, and we all know it. At best, people might just sit it out or vote for a third party (which these days is much the same thing.)

We get two options, all the time, and one of them is always someone who disagrees with us on at least, like, 90% of the issues. So, instead of holding our own accountable, we just hold our nose instead. That's how this always works.
