not expecting localities to go out and round up illegals, just to notify the Feds when they have them in custody and detain them until the Feds can come and do the actual enforcing. You can argue with whether that's best for preventing local crime, getting help from illegals that are witnesses, etc. but that's wholly different from claiming you're having to enforce Fed law, and shouldn't allow you to just ignore that law.

I guess I'm struggling to see how this is really different than when the Feds threatened highway dollars for not complying with the 21 yr old drinking age, the Obama Administration threatened education dollars and compliance costs for school systems that didn't comply with their transgender directive (which wasn't even a law), or other such hammers laid down by the Feds. Or for that matter, why any state couldn't just ignore any Fed law, like a Universal Background check for gun purchases for example, and just claim they don't have to enforce that Fed law.

Maybe one of our many resident lawyers here can clear up the confusion.
