I think its a different issue if the local government is actually

taking positive steps to interfere with the federal government. If they slash the tires of INS cars that is a problem. Right now the local authorities are just doing nothing. There is a definite distinction there.

In terms of statements coming back and biting them, state officials not cooperating with federal laws happens all the time. An easy example is Republican state AGs suing the Obama administration over the Clean Power Plan (and other things). These AGs were very clear that their goal which was to frustrate the federal law.

And I really disagree with your last paragraph as it blatantly disregards the rule of law. You are saying that the executive can throw people in jail for doing nothing wrong. Yeah, the jailed person will win but that person will have had their liberty restrained and suffered just because they did something that while legal, angered the government. I don't think you really want this as that is not a free society. Plus there are laws where the jailed person would win a lot of money after being released if the federal government did this (section 1983).
