I've never understood the anger over "sanctuary cities" from the right.
Well I understand why the narrative works, but not the logic behind it. Conservatives say they're concerned by those illegal immigrants who commit crimes. Sanctuary city policies make it harder for those offenders to hide.
Immigrant communities tend to stick together for the first few generations. And it's in those communities that most crimes committed by illegal residents are perpetrated. Now, put yourselves in the shoes of an undocumented individual who is the victim of a crime. Do you come forward to report it, and risk deportation, or remain silent, and allow a criminal (possibly violent) to remain on the streets. My god, that criminal might just go on to eventually hit a US citizen!
As many 2nd Amendment advocates like to say, criminals aren't stupid. They will seek out weak areas. Imagine being undocumented, and unable to carry a firearm. (Naturally I suspect the perverse response will be, "well let them legally carry weapons then!")
What sense does it make to be pro undocumented criminal, and anti undocumented worker trying to make a better life for themselves / their family?
Granted, it's not helpful when liberal mayors / governors try to grab headlines with intentionally provocative pressers opposing immigration hardliners. Those self-serving politicians are more interested in winning attention than they are helping at risk immigrant populations because they court a harsher backlash from the administration.
