they're willing to take the life of another human (other than self defense or accident obviously), but that's beside the point. So I don't really have an issue with that question, because it doesn't by any means equate to suggesting all mentally ill people are capable of killing multiple people (or any one).

The question is how do we preclude some of these people from passing a background check to legally buy a gun. There has to be some way to define what doesn't pass, but what seems pretty obvious is that our current way of doing it is woefully inadequate in terms of what types of, and how many, "crazy" people are being stopped.

It also doesn't mean that's all that needs to be done by any stretch. IMO that background system also needs to include more people with a violent history, POS that will make sure if they don't get their lady, nobody will, history of animal cruelty, etc. Not to mention much better reporting of all these types of information to the Fed system to actually be effective.
