In a time of (bad) precedents or aberrations, a "national teachable moment"
is necessary. An election can be that if (great BIG if) voters are honest and objective. In an environment of the customary negative political ads, bots, and fake news, how do we even have a clean election?
If these aberrations or precedents turn out to be as serious as they appear to be, then maybe the teachable moment of indictments, trials, and convictions would leave a more lasting impression than just an election alone.
If I may use the Nixon era as an example. Absent the midnight massacre, Nixon would have served out his second term under a cloud but still a two term president. The question of the rule of law as it applies to the president would not have had an emphatic answer, and the media as a guarantor of transparency would have been weakened as well. Nixon's fate and the effect of it on the electorate was strong for a generation............many today have either forgotten those lessons or are just unaware of them.
