auditing your son, although I thought the IRS could only go back six years unless the taxpayer filed no return or a fraudulent return.

My point is, with a budget of 12 billion and 80K employees there's no reason the IRS can't prioritize auditing more high income tax payers. There were 1.3 million tax returns with AGI of over $500K in 2016, representing less than 1% of returns, but 36% of total income tax. On the flip side, there were 91 million returns with income of less than $50K, representing 60% of all tax returns and 5% of total income tax. The audit rate of the 2nd group should be near zero and only in cases where an algorithm predicts a very high chance of fraud. The audit rate for the first group can/should be much higher.
