Umm, I've got the basis of basic common sense. If someone can explain to


what 70K non-auditing employees at the IRS actually do, I'm open to being convinced there are 70K vital non-auditing roles at the IRS, but it sounds like an opportunity to redeploy resources.

I've made a career of late identifying waste and unproductive roles in sales organizations and redirecting funding to hire more quota carrying resources without increasing the overall selling expense. Left unchecked, organizations get fat and inefficient and all sorts of sales support and overlay roles pop up and grow overtime. Each one is always individually justified, but eventually it reaches a point where you aggregate it up and you realize you have 3-4 people in the sales organization who don't carry a direct quota for every guy/gal with a direct quota, and you end up with an overall structure that doesn't make sense. I would be beyond shocked if somehow the IRS has overcome this problem and is humming along as an efficient, property structured machine with the right balance of 8 non-auditing employees for every auditor.
