I think it's complicated. I'm having a nice steak tonight with two
Trumpies, one a very committed Trumpie. And we don't necessarily steer clear of politics when we get together. I can be quite the blowhard when I get a few beers in me - hard to believe, I know.
These guys don't ever want to admit that they support a racist (or a guy who is stoking that fire for his own political benefit), so I already know I will never convince them that Trump's comments were racist. If we're being honest, there is a political element to all this. I drew the analogy to Omar's "Benjamins" remark below, but let's face it, the inverse of my point is also true. Dems were far more tolerant of her "trope" than they would have been if a repub said it, and especially if Trump said it. They would not have watered down their rebuke, which they did when it was targeting one of their own. I'm not terribly surprised that in this day and age Congressional repubs are keeping their heads down.
I think there is a lesson to be learned from Hill's "deplorables" remark. Attack the candidate all you want. But I'm not sure it pays to attack the supporters of the candidate. That might have been one of the things that cost Hill the election. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 07/17/2019 10:14AM]
