It is in flux, but there are also obvious distinctions.


I would like to draw a distinction in your equivalency of the Bernie phenomena and Trumpism/authoritarianism.

Trumpism and all that it entails is real. It is here and it is in power in the Executive branch and 1/2 of the legislature, meaning that it has a tight grip on most of the levers of government. In the states where Trump is strong, so is Trumpism, in terms of the state legislatures.

Bernie and his following are still trying to find some relevancy within the Democratic Party, primarily by way of the candidacy of one man, Bernie. Of course Bernie was defeated in the 2016 primaries. That should provide some indication of the appetite for what he is selling. I seriously doubt he will win this time around either, for all of the obvious reasons.

Lastly, Bernie style populism has little or no power within either the national or state legislatures.
