That's a big negatory. Ever see Bye Bye Birdie? comedy musical inspired by

Elvis Presley's drafting into the (peacetime) army, in 1957.

We had a draft throughout the 60s but there were deferments for things like being a student, being married, having children, etc. However in 1965 LBJ terminated the exemption for married men without children. And as Dan already pointed out, what happened in 1969 was the switchover from that system to the lottery system with no student deferment.
