Hillary was very polarizing and I don't think the Bernie bros that sat out
the last election or voted Jill Stein in protest fully grasped that a) Donald might actually win, and b) what a shit show a Trump presidency would be. And Hillary ran a terrible campaign, totally ignoring and taking for granted those midwestern states that had previously been reliably blue.
Other than Bernie, I don't think any of the Dem candidates would be nearly as polarizing as Hillary. I can't imagine anyone who would otherwise support Bernie sitting this year out and allowing Trump to be re-elected. And I suspect the democrats will have learned from 2016 and not take Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania for granted as reliably blue.
