Good and bad is a spectrum, IMHO, not an "in or out" proposition.
I've known lots of cops over the years (friends of the family, guys I grew up with, people I have known professionally, etc.) and I'm not going to take a position on being good or bad, but most I have known (at least street or patrol cops) are pretty aggressive people with violent tendencies. I think you almost have to be in order for that to be an appealing job. And it really does draw out the bully in some of them. Especially when they encounter another man who doesn't roll over and submit to them or calls them out for unfair treatment. Have seen some pretty awful civil rights cases -- one in particular from my time as a federal law clerk where three cops beat up a 14 year old Salvadoran kid so bad that he had to have his jaw wired shut and a brace put in his leg.
I don't think THAT level of brutality is common, but I do think they regularly rough people up, especially young minority men who aren't "respectful" of them in the sense of kissing their asses and letting the cops humiliate and bully them around. Then the same cops are nice as can be to old ladies and "nice" clean cut white families, of course....
