You can work with that. Why the statue or marker is there matters imo, not definitive, but significant. There are few cases I'm aware of where I personally come down on the side of leaving them be. Cemeteries, battlefields, very local things. Simple markers, like the names on the Rotunda of all UVa students that died in the Civil War along with all the other wars, I would have left that, with context. Certainly get the objections.

edit: Read a couple months back something about how Lee warned against putting up statues to glorify the Confederacy, that it would be harmful.
