Interesting that some folks think that this is a completely new phenomenon
and that there is essentially nothing that can be done. In past epidemics some fairly drastic measures were taken.
The Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 was partly defeated by the closure of schools, churches, and other places of larger gatherings and it wasn't met with a lot of political resistance.
The Yellow Fever Epidemic of Philadelphia in 1793 necessitated a mass exodus of the city until the disease died out.
