There was an absolute vacuum of appeal to anyone under 40 and educated

Which the socialist movement - which already had been resuscitated by fallout from the Great Recession - has partially filled.
Ultimately if socialists do sweep into power, it will be because Biden didn't make the most of his Roosevelt moment by failing to provide enough economic relief to provide some stability to individuals, to encourage a building back of sectors of the economy that have been flattened by the pandemic and are unlikely to be able to attract private capital AND by not reining in advisors who will push for a scorched-earth virus response.
