The DOJ is working with a larger task force (including state and local officials) to address a rising tide of threats and intimidation tactics being used against school board members and other public servants. The catalyst is, of course, the spate of threats and intimidation tactics that downright classless, hate-filled Trumpers have been unleashing on school boards recently. Some of them over masks, some of them in response to their daily diet of fearmongering about how racism is being taught, etc.

It isn't the content that is being investigated, it's the tactic. The aim is to help schools deal with these types of situations no matter who carries them out.

If a day comes where BLM activists are trying to intimidate school boards and telling the members they are going to shoot them, this effort should help there just the same.
