Votes from people who want no part of defunding the police.

It would be nice if the dem left flank wasn’t creating that challenge for the Spanbergers of the party. No matter how deft the candidate, some voters will be swayed by repub efforts to amplify it and hang it around the party’s neck generally. As I said elsewhere, I think that’s exactly what happened in certain key areas in 2020.

Most people saying defund really mean changing police ethos from warrior to guardian. While that could involve shifting funding around it probably involves more funding on policing in general.

Defund the police is an angry lash out by progressives at police that is not an accurate “short description” of the real policy goals of most, and is only costly politically. Spanbereger probably can message around it, but it would be better if she didn’t have to. There are enough challenges without her own party gift wrapping that one to her opponents.
