Xi may look at cost benefit trade off short term and play the long game. Taiwan can arm itself to a greater degree and we, others can help. We could also prepare economic sanctions. So maybe delays things.

I'm no China expert....but seems like they could play the long game the same way they did with Hong Kong. Reinforce their absolute military strength with increasing incursions. Reinforce the message (as they have been doing) that the west won't come to Taiwan's aid. Continue to nurture parties and factions within Taiwan that support Chinese reunification or fear the consequences of a military confrontation.
