Yeah, we're pretty much in agreement on this topic. I voted for it here in

VA too, and the good news is in the end, after all the partisanship failed, is I think we ended up with a pretty fair and reasonable map. I have advocated for maps with only straight lines, and no more than 8 lines per district, but this got us pretty close to geographic representation rather than a pre-defined partisan outcome.

Yes, pushback against that comes from both sides, as you're describing in NY, and what pushed us further down this path to here IMO, when we saw Dems pushing to create minority majority districts in the 90's (and the resulting and easily predictable heavily GOP districts surrounding them).
