I don't see how Taiwan and Ukraine situation is different. If we not going
to be directly involved militarily to defend Ukraine against Russia, why would we be different in direct military involvement to defend Taiwan? Both are invading of a sovereign nation (of which Taiwan's status is more debatable) by a major nuclear power. I think China will look at this very closely in gauging West's response if/when they do act against Taiwan.
Practically, direct military support of Ukraine would be easier than in a Taiwan conflict too. Friendly military bases and staging areas are much closer to Ukraine. In a Taiwan conflict, I'm not sure Korea, Japan, etc would want to be openly involved. So likely military support would be heavily relied on navel power.
