I actually think being obstructionist comes with more political risk

On many levels. First and foremost, there are simply more important battles to fight right now. The next SC nominee may carry far more risk to the SC make-up to a liberal than this one does (probably). Can't get further right than Scalia.

The dems that might get pissed if the dem party does not fight this - where do you think they'll go? They're going to vote for Trump next time? Maybe they will go third party or they'll stay home, but I doubt it. People who are that engaged are generally not the third party or stay at home on election day types.

Conversely, we do know that the dems need to win votes which they lost back. The "Trump Dems" will probably only be more alienated by a stupid political move. And the stay at home types who are sick of the whole process are not likely to be cheered by more petty bullshtein, which is how I think this would be perceived.

Honestly my friend, the dems have become a party of political buffoons. They anoint candidates, they ignore local races and their significance to the bigger political picture, they take things for granted (like support in Mich and WI). This would be more buffoonery IMO.
