I have my doubts about that. I think many dems were overconfident

about these rust belt voters' loyalty to the dem party, and even if Trump doesn't really deliver, which is almost a given, I would not count on them turning back to the dems in 2018 or 2020. There is this distinct sense among some that the dems have lost their way, are completely absorbed in silly cultural issues rather than the issues that effect our lives, are really just catering to those east and west coast bubbles, etc. And they may in general still see the populist, kick-over-the-table-guy as being preferable.

Too much emphasis on killing the nomination of this "aw-shucks" midwestern justice, who does not threaten to turn the court one iota, will quite possibly seem like the dems taking a stand alright - one that just reinforces for these folks that the party lost their way and doesn't have the everyman's concerns at heart.
