First, this is a shame. One can show respect for the office of VP even if one does not agree with the sitting VP. I'm not exactly sure what stick you have to wield against kids who have already graduated, but the teaching moment here should be about civility, and the fact that we can show respect and disagree at the same time.

Even more important - its apparently been shown in different polls and analyses that young people - those just about to rise to voting age and those who just did - are becoming increasingly disengaged from the democratic process - I don't need to vote, that kind of thing. That attitude combined with our loss of respect for journalistic integrity probably together pose the greatest threat to our democracy. More important than our subjective feelings about the value of their life's work - we hopefully agree about the value of our govt.

In fact I've seen some polls suggesting that increasing number of young people say "screw it, who cares if we live in an autocracy?"

And for lord's sake do away with safe spaces and make clear to these kids that sometimes, we are obligated to sit and politely listen, not just to a person we disagree with, but sometimes to actual statements we disagree with. Point is, nobody can make you agree, but sometimes you do have to listen.
