Public vs. Private power is irrelevant IF the government is acting in

its proper role (protecting and defending the liberty of the individual). Coercion and force against other is a violation of the rights of the individual. As for slavery and the free market being compatible, nothing could be further from the truth. A free market, by definition, requires free and voluntary exchange of goods and services. Forced servitude is an obvious violation of that idea.

I don't know how you can argue that the potential governmental power over our lives hasn't changed since the 1940s when the ACTUAL governmental power has change exponentially. Every new federal law, rule and regulation is yet another expansion of power over our lives. There is virtually no aspect of our lives that is not dictated, in some way, by the government (and the numbers ways grows every years).
