Market failure is a real thing (if you don't know what I am talking about, google it). If you believe that government should step in and prevent market failure, then I am sorry that I misinterpreted you. But if you think that there is no role of government in market failure then you believe that private power is fine, but government power is not.

I think this is reflected in your views on slavery. In a theoretical free market with several critical assumptions (easy entry/exit, perfect knowledge, no market power) I think you are relatively correct. But the assumptions that are required to get to your idealistic view of a free market are not warranted by real world experience. I was being hyperbolic about slavery, but the historical view is unregulated markets leading to exploitation.

Next, what are the specific laws that are so despotic to you? I understand the need for laws to prevent the "rule of the mob", but is there any role for democratic governance to correct for market failures?

Relatedly, do you never feel that your rights are being infringed by the private marketplace? This is a silly example, but where I feel my liberty is most restricted is at UVA sporting events. The yellow-shirt security people are fascists lol. In the real world context, what about African-Americans in the Jim Crow South? They could not go to most stores because of private discrimination. The free market did not correct for this. Was their liberty not being infringed?
