This is the fish in the middle of the battle
and incidentally, it is "illegal" for anybody to even market the fish here as catfish. That was one (of the many) specific laws passed several years ago squarely focused on this product by those hoping to kill its acceptance here. As it happens, I'd argue that the public perception of "catfish" isn't anything that great and Pangasius has done very well because of a number of other attributes -- including stark differences with our predominant species of farmed catfish here. However, one of the many jokes in all of this is that we have that law making it illegal to market any fish "catfish" in the U.S. other than one single family and at the same time, we are trying to kill the import of this fish by passing another set of laws making USDA the sole agency responsible for "catfish" regulation (carving this one item out of FDA from all other seafood - how efficient!) and for the purpose of that law and government regulation -- Pangsius is defined as a catfish.
