There is a voting bloc who believes that the country is way too liberal and that the federal government pretty much shouldn't do anything ever. This bloc essentially controls the Republican Party right now even though it only represents a very narrow fringe of voters. Since Trump doesn't know his ass from his elbow when it comes to policy, he's just going along with what the people who helped get him elected feed him.

Meanwhile, there is nothing out there that remotely resembles centrist leadership. Someone who got ahold of the bully pulpit and told the extremists to STFU would do very well. If this person is out there, I haven't seen him.
