It makes me sad that Kelly is debasing himself for Trump
I suspect he'll regret it and we'll read about it in a Bob Woodward book at some point. Everyone who comes into Trump's orbit is humiliated eventually.
I'm sure Trump went into that call with good intentions. Even I don't think he taunted the family on purpose. But it's clear he upset the family, and that he either wasn't prepared or he choked and blanked on Johnson's name.
I've said before that there was one thing I couldn't imagine Trump doing as president, and it was consoling people in a crisis like Obama did with Sandy Hook or Bush did after 9/11. Trump just doesn't do empathy. The whole emotion makes him uncomfortable. And we've seen that play out in every part of his presidency. He bungled Puerto Rico and it's clear that he bungled several of these calls.
Like I said, he didn't go into this wanting to hurt the family. But he doesn't understand sacrifice because he's never had to experience it, so the idea of it makes him so uncomfortable that he loses control of himself. He tries to make jokes or resort to colloquial cliches. And to give his boss a brief respite, Kelly invoked his dead son.
I wish these people would realize that debasing yourself to save Trump isn't worth it. He'll fire Kelly eventually or throw him under the bus to distract from something else. Yesterday meant nothing to Trump. To him, people who work for him aren't real people, just employees who serve him, not the office or the country.
