We often forget that politics and political calculation are hardly new.

Agree with what you wrote and none of it excuses the South from trying to secede to preserve the right to own human beings as slaves, firing cannons at federal property, or sending an army to fight the Union forces. If they wanted to make it about legality, they could have filed a lawsuit instead of instigating a bloody war.

Would add that regardless there are few causes in human history more despicable than that of the Confederacy. I would put the Nazis and probably ISIS well ahead, but would have to go pretty far back in history to find anything else worse. Especially given societal norms of the time: to think Americans were killing other Americans over the right to own slaves in the latter half of the 19th Century -- well into the age of liberal democracy -- is just mind blowing.
