You are right that businesses need to make adjustments to adapt to market changes and, at this point, these are relatively small numbers -- though more seem likely. Randall Stephenson is staking AT&T's future on these adaptations -- AT&T's traditional markets are subject to big changes and have been declining, while new markets face stiff competition from Amazon and Google. So eliminate some jobs and invest in new technology. Make some extra income on cable after the end of net neutrality. But in the larger view, Stephenson is looking at the Time-Warner merger as the real answer to what AT&T needs to survive. I see these one-time bonuses as part of that larger strategy to get Trump administration approval.
