You're right that more laws won't completely stop awful stuff like this. But I believe you can limit it by making it more difficult for would-be mass murderers. Just like with any kind of crime prevention, each thing you do eliminates one layer of potential perpetrators. Think of it like the measures you'd take to discourage burglars. Somebody really determined will get in but each thing you do will keep out some skill or intelligence level of bad guy until you can keep most out. And admittedly, you reach a point of diminishing returns with the various efforts you take, and with gun regulations, past that point more laws could become onerous.

Somebody like the Las Vegas shooter would be clever and organized enough to carry out an atrocity - but without bumpstocks and hi-cap magazines, the death toll would've been much lower (I know, I know, I can probably pull a trigger as fast as a bumpstock at first - but only for about 30 seconds and then my finger - and anybody's finger - would cramp up and I'd have to slow way down). But a clip size limit would've slowed down this latest shooter, and who knows whether a background check, age restriction, or a waiting period would've been effective in preventing him buying a gun in the first place. I think it's a huge mistake to do nothing out of fear of doing too much. It's awful that the issue has become us vs them when the question should be how do we work to prevent these things. The key is 'constitutionally permissible' laws and regulations, of course, and nobody should be afraid of that, especially given the current composition of the Supreme Court.
