“Information warfare against the United States of America.”
That's how the Russians described their operation. So maybe a little more than a kerfuffle. And more than just some Facebook catfishing. Literally thousands of fake accounts set up on social media. Travel to U.S. under false pretenses. Rallies. Stolen identities. It employed hundreds of individuals for its online operations and had an annual budget equaling millions of U.S. dollars.
This is only one piece of the puzzle, but it should put to rest Trump's calling the whole thing a “Phony Democrat excuse for losing the election.” That, stated dozens of time over the past year, in the face of the intelligence community report last January that it had “high confidence” that “President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016” targeting the U.S. presidential election.
