I guess I disagree with you to a degree about

It being purely about power. IMO It’s about troubled individuals blaming their problems on others and seeking revenge. Sure there’s an aspect of attempting to show some power they never had before in the process but i dont think it’s that simple. a key point you left out is that these shooters don’t expect to walk back out the door once the walk in. In a lot of ways it’s just a Suicide attempt but way more sinister. Im not sure metal detectors or armed guards or any locked doors make any difference to someone prepared to die.

Armed guard at the door? - ok shoot him first. Metal detectors? Who cares I’m just shooting people any way. Locked door? - Sir can you hold the door for me, I forgot my science book? Thanks, now I’ll shoot you too. If I’m dying today anyway none of it matters.

At the end of the day it comes down to guns and access to them. Americans commit every other crime at similar rates to the rest of the world. We commit gun crimes at rates that are crazy compared to the rest of the civilized world. Anything else is just a half assed attempt to make us feel safe without actually doing much.
