Not sure you understand what I mean by deterrent

Something is only a deterrent if it means you would have to give up something you care about.

Most of these people don't really care if they live or die, so the death penalty is not a deterrent. Once they reach this point, there is not a single punishment available within our justice system that would give them pause.

To truly deter them, you have to deprive them of what they are trying to achieve...which is a feeling of complete power over the world that has been tormenting them. If you have a gun and no one else does, you are powerful. But if you have a gun and everyone else does too, you aren't.

And I should probably be clear, I am not necessarily advocating that teachers be allowed to be armed. I am simply explaining why it is a completely plausible concept that is deserving of debate instead of being handwaved away as sheer lunacy.
