I understand where you are coming from, but there is a correlation here
There are many video games that are unnecessarily violent. The same can be said for some horror movies that are out there, which depict things that are gruesome and unimaginable in most people's minds.
That being said, the issue isn't just those things alone.. Combine them with someone who has a mental illness and has been cast aside and neglected (and potentially abused) and you've got a potentially volatile situation if they have access to weapons.
The point everyone is missing is that 1) it's not necessarily a gun problem, 2) it's not necessarily a video game problem, and 3) people are underestimating the mental illness problem.
