are indeed so beholden to us for protection would've been to just say "we do not want to insert ourselves into US politics, and as such don't feel it would be wise for us to comment. The transcript speaks for itself."

Trump has nothing for which to start a vendetta, and the Dems have no reason to push these conspiracy theories about him lying. But he didn't do that. Why would he take any risk pissing off either side? Well, other than answering the questions truthfully.
